چکیده

An ab initio theory is devised for the x-ray photoabsorption cross section of atoms in the field of a moderately intense optical laser (10 W cm2 ). The laser dresses the core-excited atomic states, which introduces a dependence of the cross section on the angle between the polarization vectors of the two linearly polarized radiation sources. We use the Hartree-Fock-Slater approximation to describe the atomic many-body problem in conjunction with a non-relativistic quantum-electrodynamic approach to treat the photon–electron interaction. The continuum wave functions of ejected electrons are treated with a complex absorbing potential that is derived from smooth exterior complex scaling. The solution to the two-color (x-ray plus laser) problem is discussed in terms of a direct diagonalization of the complex symmetric matrix representation of the Hamiltonian. Alternative treatments with time-independent and time-dependent non-Hermitian perturbation theories are presented that exploit the weak interaction strength between x-rays and atoms. We use the theory to study the absorption cross section of krypton atoms near the K edge. A pronounced modification of the cross section is found in the presence of the optical laser.

Observation of sub-natural linewidths for cold atoms in a magneto-optic trap

We have studied the absorption of a weak probe beam through cold rubidium atoms in a magneto-optic trap. The absorption spectrum shows two peaks with the smaller peak having linewidth as small as 28% of the natural linewidth. The modification happens because the laser beams used for trapping also drive the atoms coherently between the ground and excited states. This creates “dressed” states who...

X-ray Charge-Dens Study of 5-Chloro-8-hydroxy-6-methyloaphthalene-l.4-dione: A Hydroxynaphthoquinone Derivative

The X-ray charge density analysis of a hydroxynaphthoquinnne derivative was obtained by multipolar Hansen-Coppens formalism refinement through high resolution X-ray diffraction data at 100(1) K. The molecularproperties of the title compound resulted from the combined experimental and the quantum theory of atoms inmolecules (QTAIM) studies. The topological properties of the covalent bonds and of...

Dressed-band theory for semiconductors in a high-intensity infrared laser field

Under the illumination of intense off-resonant laser light, the electronic states of semiconductors are strongly modified, or dressed, by the oscillating electric field. We present a framework using linear combination of atomic orbital band theory to calculate the dressed band structure and optical absorption spectrum of covalent semiconductors in an intense off-resonant laser field. The intera...

Beyond the single-atom response in absorption line shapes: probing a dense, laser-dressed helium gas with attosecond pulse trains.

We investigate the absorption line shapes of laser-dressed atoms beyond the single-atom response, by using extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulse trains to probe an optically thick helium target under the influence of a strong infrared (IR) field. We study the interplay between the IR-induced phase shift of the microscopic time-dependent dipole moment and the resonant-propagation-induced re...

Atomic tungsten for ultrafast hard X-ray generation.

High-resolution X-ray absorption measurements (with an accuracy of +/-0.3 eV) of ZnSO(4) (aq) were performed with ultrafast selected energy X-ray absorption spectroscopy (USEXAS) using a laser-driven tungsten target X-ray source. The results were used to determine the absolute spectral positions of characteristic emission lines. By comparing these positions to those predicted for the line emiss...
